Advent 4, 2018 Waiting Expectantly

February 2, 2019 @ 10:55 am

The Magnificat:  Luke will be sung by the Choir and danced to by Kristen Breding. There was NO sermon.

I am inclined to focus on the Mary/Elizabeth interaction but Children’s Time and a Prayer over Plates that focuses on both Luke passages (or either) is fine.  The latter portion of the Luke is called “the Magnificat” from the Latin.  Magnificat anima mea dominum.  My soul magnifies the Lord.

Advent 2, 2018 — Waiting Patiently, in Peace

February 2, 2019 @ 10:48 am

“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”  Isaiah 40:31 (English Standard Version)

From my newsletter article (Click to read):  Our theme for Advent will be: Waiting patiently in hope, peace, joy and love.  Each week will focus on one of those four ideas.  We want to honor Advent I think part of how we honor the season is cherishing and embracing waiting.  The Isaiah above is a theme for all who want to move quickly.  ‘Renew your strength:  wait.’

This week, we are somehow, waiting patiently … in peace … Last week the invitation was to be alert, be awake, be on watch, here are there God sightings which make us hopeful and if yes, don’t wait to be a messenger for God on this.  Yes, wait patiently, but patiently is not necessarily silently.  Go and tell people the Good News.  Be a messenger.  Be a Malachi.  Be a John the Baptist (ok, maybe not a John the Baptist).  The Lord IS coming.  Go tell someone!

Holy Week: Palm Sunday, March 25, 2018

April 12, 2018 @ 1:19 pm

Holy Week begins with Palm SUnday. Join us as we reflect on the events of this week thorugh the lens of Mark's Gospel, reflecting on Jesus' Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem. Instead of a coronation we find a sudden and tragic turn of events that finds Jesus on a cross. We reflected on the words, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom."

Unafraid — Fear of Failure

January 28, 2018 @ 4:10 pm

Numbers 13: 27-33 and 1st Timothy 1: 3-11

This is a look at the Fear of Failure with a lot of help from Brene Brown and others.

Key is that Caleb means "Whole Hearted" and Joshua means "God is Salvation."

January 28, 2018 – Fear of Failure

This fourth sermon on this topic will reprise elements of the first week – here focus is we often just don't get started because we are afraid of failing.

Question is "what giants or monsters do we fear in our quest to be agents of transformation in the world?"  I wonder how much of the answer is a lack of trust:  trust in God and trust in ourselves?

There be monsters was on the edge of selected nautical maps in the 15th Century.  That which was out of sight was also to be feared.  We create our own monsters.  It does seem to me that the idea of "fear of failure" to some extent may be the unstated rhinoceros (elephant?) at the table on our new church start conversation.  Maybe.

The issue is to get to being Unafraid.  Yes, we all suffer from Fear of Failure and a solid dose of trust – God, others, ourselves, is an excellent cure.

Numbers 13: 27-33, 14: 1-3, 1st Timothy 1: 3-11, will frame the discussion.
